NEW STUFF!!

Here’s something that we don’t get to do too often. Since our show focuses on over fifty years of music history, we rarely get to play stuff that is brand spanking new, but this week is different. I missed last week’s show for business reasons and in our absence, engineer Mike Tietjen did an admirable job of covering for me and Heidy. Mike handled the show by playing a combination of personal favorites and contemporary tracks, and it inspired me to do something similar. Recently, we completed a cycle of shows that brought us up to the present, so before reverting back for another cycle, I figured I’d follow Mike’s lead and do one more show on a few of the new releases that are making an impression on me. Next week, we ‘re gonna cover music from 1957, but for now, here’s a few tracks from some very compelling new releases. As you may be able to tell, we had a great time while broadcasting this show. Hope you enjoy it

June - December 1992...and Who Cares?

June-December 1992

Nobody would ever accuse me of listening to too much music from the 1990’s. To be blunt, it’s a decade that I’d just as soon forget, at least as far as ‘pop’ music is concerned. Any decade that allows Michael Bolton to be one of its best-selling musical performers (I cannot refer to him as an ‘artist’) is bound to be lacking, and I’m afraid that this show highlights some of the decade’s shortcomings. When writing the book “American Hit Radio,” it was imperative for me to choose the best top 40 pop songs from this decade, but the simple truth is that there weren’t very many that qualified as ‘timeless’. This show highlights some of the difficulties that I had while attempting to determine which songs might sound good 10 or 15 years into the future. Luckily, I believe that a few do still hold up. Want to know which ones? Listen and you can find out.
And just to show how fast these things can change, I’ve already changed my opinion regarding then relevance of Alice In Chains, particularly in comparison to the Lindsay Buckingham track I chose. If I had the chance, I would definitely have played an Alice In Chains track instead, but hey, that’s the point of this show. We all need to remain open minded and willing to change our minds, right?
………………Right?…

Here’s a list of some of the songs we cover over the course of this program:
1) Why? – Annie Lennox
2) End of the Road – Boyz II Men
3) All I Want - Toad the Wet Sprocket
4) Even Better Than the Real Thing – U2
5) That Train Don’t Stop Here – Los Lobos (Album Track)
6) Soul Drifter – Lindsay Buckingham (Album Track…see above)

Fall 1982

Fall 1982

This week’s show takes a look at popular music from the 2nd half of 1982, but we decided to shift the emphasis for this show from singles to albums. To be honest, the pop charts were in such disarray during the early ‘80s that they just wouldn’t provide enough material for a compelling program. Albums, though, were excellent from this era, but usually didn’t generate much chart action for the individual tracks, which explains why we emphasize album tracks for this program…and for a bit of relief, there are no ‘Great Misses’ either. So, relax, sit back and enjoy.
Here’s a list of the songs covered in this program;
The Singles
1) Let It Whip – The Dazz Band
2) Blue Eyes – Elton John
3) Steppin’ Out – Joe Jackson
The Album Tracks
4) Slit Skirts – Pete Townshend
5) Come Back to Me – X
6) More Than This – Roxy Music
7) The Message – Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five
