This is a chestnut from the Shaddup and Listen Club brought to us by Tom Ryan. He labeled this one "Yet Another Pointlessly Eclectic Collection of Songs..." I don't remember the exact date we originally received this disk, but I'd guess it was about two years ago. Tom's disks have generally been accompanied with a letter describing the disk, but that's long gone. So at this point I can't even tell you what is on it and/or what Tom was thinking. Here's what I know:

1) David Mead - Flamin' Angel
2) ?
3) XTC
4) Bryan Ferry - As Time Goes By
5) Ella Fitzgerald
6) Crowded House - Weather with You
7) Richard Thompson
8) ?
9) Bjork
10) Coldplay
11) Radiohead
12) The Kinks
13) Pete Yorn
14) Vulgar Boatmen
15)Badly Drawn Boy
16) Robyn Hitchcock
17)
18) Bob Dylan

Perhaps Tom can update us with this info later...

My 2 second review: Songs 10 - 18 are great and coherently organized. Otherwise the disk is a schizophrenic tour of a tortured psyche. Anybody who would put Ella Fitzgerald and Bjork on the same disk is just begging for psychotherapy and heaping dose of haldol.

Enjoy.

Psychotherapy and a heaping dose of haldol? That pretty much describes my life around the time I assembled this collection.
A little background information (which is probably too much information, but I'm like that) - I was in the middle of a very messy divorce whan I made this disk. As is true of most divorces, the circumstances were awful, but I was feeling especially wrecked by the proceedings. A marriage of 16 years falling apart in a nasty way, most of which I brought upon myself (and most of which I can still justify with no sense of contradiction).
Anyway, I spent a good many months sleeping on a "Thomas the Tank Engine" quilt at my sister's house, feeling 'vewwy. vewwy sowwy' for myself, and astounded that a bad but 'stable' marriage could disintegrate as rapidly as mine did.
I was also beginning to realize that I might find myself dating again, and this possibility brought on all sorts of fantasies. This collection of songs is the extension of that fantasy. I imagined that I would play this song selection as a means of seducing my future partner, making her swoon at the romance of it all, while being overwhelmed at the nuances and huge scope of my personal taste.
It didn 't quite work out that way. I did date one girl around this time period, and she was a wonderful person, but sparks never flew.
The CD still stands as a beautiful dream, though, a magnificent fantasy of a newfound love that actually DID happen for me....only not with this CD.
Just for clarification, the song list is as follows;
FLAMIN' ANGEL - DAVID MEAD
DREAMERS OF THE DREAM - AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB
MERMAID SMILED - XTC
AS TIME GOES BY - BRYAN FERRY
ISN'T THIS A LOVELY DAY - LOUIS AND ELLA
TAKE THE WEATHER WITH YOU - CROWDED HOUSE
PERSUASION - RICHARD AND TEDDY THOMPSON
BEING SO NOT FOR YOU - P.M. DAWN
HIDDEN PLACE - BJORK
HIGH SPEED - COLDPLAY
HIGH AND DRY - RADIOHEAD
COMPLICATED LIFE - THE KINKS
SENSE - PETE YORN
YOU DON'T LOVE ME YET - THE VULGAR BOATMEN
THE SHINING - BADLY DRAWN BOY
YOU'VE GOT A SWEET MOUTH ON YOU - ROBYN HITCHCOCK
SAT WE'LL MEET AGAIN - LINDSAY BUCKINGHAM
SHOOTING STAR - BOB DYLAN

There it is, a segment of my personal life, for anyone to comment upon. Any takers?
